Hi Tyson. Your title caught my eye as my field of research is the psychology of home and how we attach to people and places. https://findinghome.substack.com/

And your piece does indeed resonate with me. I've lived most of my life in cities but I was born in the country and bought my first home in the country, where I loved living for over a decade, but now I'm back in a city again. And longing for the country...

Bucolia - a wonderful word. Thank you for that. If I ever use it, I'll give you credit.

Hi Jan! I love your writing about home and myth - I've only been subscribed for a few weeks, but I've read each post intently. Your last post about home as vocation was especially relevant to how I've been feeling both about work and writing.

I think my next post will also be related to home and the way it's rampantly commodified here in Australia. Lots of renovation, flipping, viewing home as a cash cow rather than a place to feel secure and nest. That might also be of interest - though not as lovely :(

Thank you, Tyson. It sounds like what's happening in Australia is similar to the U.S. One in seven home in the U.S. is now owned by a corporation. It's awful. And Airbnb in so many towns (in the U.S. and abroad) has wiped out long-term rentals. It was a great concept at first but now everyone just wants a buck. :(

I look forward to your next post!

Elements of this reminded me of a question you've asked before (in whichever recent economic downturn) about "whether you lost your job whether you'd look again for the same thing?" And if not, then why don't you light the match yourself, so to speak.

Also, I feel we could all do with a few more genuinely charming country weddings like that :)

I find it so interesting how drastically our ideal situation changes when you add some hypothetical freedom and then ask people to choose again. As the the country weddings, it was enough to fill my wholesome tank for the whole year!
